Hergesheimer, a retired professional engineer who worked for the city of Battle Ground during the 1990s, lives off Northeast 174th Street in the Fairgrounds neighborhood. He learned an estimated 1.5 million pounds of instrument string metal ends up in landfills each year because they aren’t accepted through local recycling programs, according to TerraCycle, a recycling company.

    One person was injured early Thursday morning while trying to rescue pets from a two-alarm fire in a Washougal apartment building. The Camas-Washougal Fire Department responded to the fire at 3:45 a.m. The fire burned through the roof of an apartment building in the 2200 block of Main Street and damaged neighboring units. Crews had the blaze under control about 5 a.m. but remained on scene for more than six hours.
