Chris Woodard is fascinated by the customs of the Mexican holiday DÍa de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. As an artist, she’s often inspired by its symbols, and some of her work entails making sugar skulls out of wood. As a member of the Mundelein Arts Commission (MAC) and a liaison of the village’s Beautification Committee, the retired teacher said she’s excited about the two groups’ most recent project, which is jointly sponsored by local flower shop Flowerama.

Ezra Atunez’s birthday party theme this year was firetrucks because he just loves them, his parents said. The 4-year-old was happy to ring the bell of an antique firetruck named Old Number One on display at the Mundelein Memorial Day parade. Many more will get to see it at the Fremont Public Library’s summer kickoff party on Sunday, and at other locations throughout Lake County in the coming months. Today, the restored vehicle is admired at parades and special events.

Teacher Appreciation Week closed out fittingly this year with recognition of and camaraderie among teachers Saturday at the McHenry County Educators of the Year ceremony at Turnberry Golf Club in Lakewood. Almost 300 people gathered this year to honor area educators with awards presented by the county’s Regional Office of Education. A record-breaking 92 people were nominated this year from all sectors of the school community.

Rebeca Groh said it took her seven years to leave an abusive relationship. Hers was a financial-abuse situation in which, over time, she said her fiancé diminished her capacity to support herself and she was forced to depend on him. For example, the mother of three said he was in charge of her disability assistance. “He was never gonna change,” Groh said. “I was tired of living that way.”Having had no economic resources for so long, Groh reached out to A Safe Place for help.
