The Capital Journal is a newspaper based in Pierre, South Dakota, established in 1881. It caters to the residents of Pierre and the nearby areas, such as Fort Pierre. As of December 2012, the newspaper had a daily circulation of 10,750 and releases new editions from Monday to Friday, taking breaks on Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Since its inception, it has served as the official print record for Hughes and Stanley counties in South Dakota.

Melissa Hortman and her husband at their home in Brooklyn Park as part of a larger plot to kill Democratic elected officials and other advocates of abortion rights. Boelter is also accused of shooting Democratic-Farmer-Labor state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, at their home in Champlin. Both Hoffmans survived the shooting, but received surgeries for their injuries and remain hospitalized.
