Less than 20 games into the regular season, the Boston Red Sox are already at the top of MLB's strikeout leaderboard. Boston's bats have struggled in the first few weeks of the campaign, besides Kristian Campbell and Wilyer Abreu. The former, a rookie, has reached base in every single game he's played, and the latter missed nearly his entire spring training with a stomach illness. The rest of the offense has been quite unreliable, and the Sox have racked up 179 strikeouts in their first 18 games.

Reporters, analysts and fans were high on the 2025 Boston Red Sox after the team's first big offseason in nearly half a decade. Boston traded for Garrett Crochet and signed Alex Bregman to take its squad to the next level with elite talent on all sides of the baseball. Crochet may be one of the only Red Sox living up to his end of the bargain, though. The Red Sox have gone through a particularly rough stretch since their commanding sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals from April 4-6.

On April 11, the Boston Red Sox were trounced by the Chicago White Sox, 11-1. NESN broadcaster Dave O'Brien attested multiple times that it was the Red Sox's worst game of the season. They one-upped it on April 14 at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa and can't blame the cold. The Tampa Bay Rays put Boston to shame with a 16-1 beatdown, during which nothing went the Red Sox's way, and it started from Tanner Houck's first pitch.

The Boston Red Sox have become contract-extension happy in recent years. After losing Mookie Betts and Xander Bogaerts to the free agent market and massive deals they would never match (although they could've,) Boston has taken to signing promising talent early. Before the 2023 season, Rafael Devers' 10-year, $313.5 million extension became the largest contract ever given in Red Sox history. Since then, Boston has focused on more team-friendly deals.

The Boston Red Sox received much offseason hype after the addition of Alex Bregman and the expected debuts of their top prospects. Despite their additions and returns, including a healthy Trevor Story, who's played just over one season's worth of games since he signed with Boston in 2022, the Sox are experiencing many of the same issues they struggled with last season. Their insane number of early strikeouts immediately comes to mind.
