Sussex County police chiefs and their second-in-commands received a refresher course on leadership at a day-long workshop April 15 in Lewes. Law enforcement from Lewes to Laurel, Greenwood to Ocean View, took part in the training exercise, organized by the Sussex County Police Chiefs Association and the Lewes Police Foundation. The seminar was designed to reinforce fundamentals that the chiefs can take back to their officers and better serve their communities.

They have been waiting for a year. The latest milestone came when the Lewes Planning Commission recommended a home-based business ordinance to mayor and city council after a lengthy discussion.

One man saves dunes, the other saves souls. They both have had immeasurable impact on life in Lewes for decades. Mayor and city council honored Dr. John Stenger and the Rev. George Edwards at its April 14 meeting. Mayor Andrew Williams called them legends of Lewes. Williams is a former student of Stenger’s, who was a science teacher at Lewes High School and, later, Cape Henlopen High School. The city honored Stenger, 98, for a single event that shaped Lewes’ environmental legacy.

A bill giving the state authority over county zoning decisions made it through the Senate May 15 by a 13-8 vote with two amendments. Sen. Russ Huxtable, D-Lewes, was one of two Democrats who voted against the bill. Senate Bill 75, sponsored by Sen. Trey Paradee, D-Dover, limits the zoning and operation restrictions a county can place on retail marijuana operations, superseding county jurisdiction.
