JAK inhibitors (JAKi) are highly effective for treating atopic dermatitis (AD). However, concerns about cardiovascular and cancer risk persist, as their elevated risk was observed in the ORAL surveillance trial of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) [1]. While the RA and AD populations likely differ, AD is independently associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer compared with the general population [2, 3].

What is already known? Fructosamine and glycated albumin are proposed as alternatives for monitoring glycaemia, particularly in African populations where conditions affecting HbA1c reliability are common. What this study has found? HbA1c shows the strongest relationship with continuous glucose monitoring-assessed average glucose, even under conditions potentially affecting reliability. Sickle cell trait does not affect the accuracy of these tests in reflecting glycaemic control.
