After England and Scotland announced bans on trans women from competitive football, it has been confirmed that players in Ireland will continue to be assessed on a case-by-case basis. A spokesperson for the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) reaffirmed the governing body’s position in a statement to RTÉ Sport, shared on Friday, May 2.

After the news was confirmed by her manager, tributes have started to pour in from friends, colleagues and fans. Born in 1959, Sobule built a successful career spanning three decades. She was best known for her 1995 hit song ‘I Kissed a Girl’, which is widely regarded as the first openly queer-themed pop song to break into the Billboard top 20 charts.
Trans women banned from competitive football in England and Scotland following Supreme Court ruling

Trans women will be banned from playing women’s football in Scotland and England as of next season. The football associations of both countries announced their decisions on Wednesday, April 30, and Thursday, May 1, respectively, following the UK Supreme Court’s ruling on the legal definition of ‘woman’. Until now, Scotland allowed trans women to compete in their preferred gender category on a case-by-case basis and with testosterone levels taken into account.

In the social media post, he shared a screenshot of one listing, which had a tick beside ‘Postgraduate’ (confirming that it was open to postgraduate students), and an ‘X’ beside ‘LGBTQ+ Welcome’ and ‘Disabled’.

Over 600 hate-related crimes and incidents recorded in Ireland in 2024

A total of 676 hate crimes and hate-related incidents were recorded in Ireland in 2024, according to new figures published by An Garda Síochána on Tuesday, April 29. These numbers show a 4% increase compared to 2023. According to the new figures, 592 hate crimes were reported to Gardaí in 2024, compared to the 548 in 2023. Moreover, the force recorded 84 hate-related (non-crime) incidents in 2024, a decrease from 103 in the previous year.

British beauty retailer Lush Cosmetics has launched a new campaign in support of trans rights in partnership with UK organisations TransActual and My Genderation. Running from April 23 to May 11, the campaign will feature eye-catching window displays across all UK Lush stores, which will be selling the new “Liberation” bath bomb in the colours of the trans flag. 75% of proceeds from the bath bomb, which costs £6 (around €7), will go to trans-led groups TransActual and My Genderation.

Not A Phase, a charity committed to uplifting and improving the lives of trans people across the UK, has reported being “saved” following an emergency fundraising drive supported by Nicola Coughlan. The Irish actor and vocal LGBTQ+ ally helped raise as much as €150,000 for the organisation, donating €11,664 of her own money.
