Akron police officers David Rea and Matthew Akers shot Mohammad Isaifan roughly 14 times, including in the back, after he abandoned his vehicle along I-76 East in the high-speed lane. The shooting prompted a years-long legal battle and numerous protests, which coincided with other police-related protests. The federal judge ultimately ruled in favor of the two police officers.

Former Loew’s Theater struggled as television gained popularity. Akron parking lot owner bought building in 1964 with plan to raze it. Akron Jaycees rescued theater and gave it a new name in 1965. Akron came perilously close to losing one of its most beloved landmarks. The former Loew’s Theater at 182 S. Main St. seemed destined for the wrecking ball until a local group stepped forward to save it. A new name went up the marquee in June 1965: The Civic Theatre.
