Implementation Science
Implementation Science focuses on sharing research that explores how to effectively integrate research discoveries into everyday healthcare practices, whether in clinical settings, organizations, or policy-making. Every day, new findings emerge from biomedical, social sciences, organizational studies, and management research. However, these discoveries are not always applied in healthcare as they should be. Implementation research investigates ways to ensure that established treatments, practices, and interventions in clinical and organizational management are consistently adopted in routine care, ultimately aiming to enhance health outcomes. This field also examines the factors that affect the behavior of patients, healthcare professionals, and organizations, both in healthcare environments and broader population contexts.

We enrolled 98 outpatient agencies providing prenatal care or services (such as education, nutrition, support, etc.) in the United States or Puerto Rico between 10/5/2018 and 2/25/2021. The last agency follow-up assessment occurred on 8/20/2023. We chose to include a range of agencies for which ROSE would be appropriate to inform scale-up.

This scoping review was conducted following the methodological framework described by Arksey and O’Malley which consists of five steps: (1) formulating the research question, (2) identifying relevant studies, (3) selecting eligible studies, (4) charting the data and (5) collating, summarising and reporting the results [30]. Reporting of the review complied with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses – Scoping Reviews (Additional file 1) [31].

The SAIA strategy bundles systems engineering tools into an iterative, five-step process applied at the facility-level to give frontline workers and managers a systems view of cascade performance, identify priority areas for improvement, discern modifiable barriers, and test workflow modifications and has been previously described in the literature (Fig. 1).

Aim 1: Determine whether implementation of the Navicare model sustains access (co-primary outcome) to mental health services in rural and remote settings in the post-implementation period compared to the implementation period. Aim 2: Determine the success (or otherwise) of implementing, scaling up and sustaining Navicare in four regional communities, and likely mechanisms of action.
