    On Friday, two teachers killed in last year’s shooting at Apalachee High School will be added to the National Memorial to Fallen Educators in Emporia, Kansas. Cristina Irimie and Richard Aspinwall both worked as math teachers at Apalachee High School in Winder. On September 4th of last year they were killed during a school shooting that also took the lives of two students. Now, they will be honored along with seven other U.S. teachers who died in the service of education.

    Georgia’s Sen. Raphael Warnock is pushing for a bipartisan bill to help shelter animals in Georgia. The “Bringing Animals Relief and Kibble” act, or BARK Act, would remove some bureaucratic barriers to pet stores donating pet food to shelters, including protection from liability. Pet stores often throw out unsold pet food and supplies instead of donating them to local shelters. Warnock said this bill would help Georgia’s vulnerable shelter animals and reduce waste in landfills.

    A State House study committee focusing on the costs and effects of smoking met for the first time Thursday. Democratic State Representative Michelle Au, who is a medical doctor, is leading an effort to increase taxes on cigarettes in Georgia, which is the second lowest in the nation. Experts say Georgia is spending hundreds of millions more on Medicaid for people sickened by smoking than it gets from the cigarette tax.
