The Daily Free Press (ISSN 1094-7337) is the independent student newspaper of Boston University. It is available online from Monday to Friday and is also printed monthly on Thursdays during the academic year, except during breaks, exams, or when there are no advertisements to support printing costs. This publication is managed by Back Bay Publishing Co., Inc., a nonprofit organization run by students from Boston University. The newspaper was established on May 5, 1970, by a group of BU students.

    At first sight, BU doesn’t appear to have much green space. The school’s campus stretches for two-miles along Commonwealth Avenue, one of Boston’s busiest streets, giving it limited space for rolling fields, trees and meadows. Although green space appears sparse, students and professors have found a variety of urban sanctuaries both on and off campus.

    Graduate student pole vaulter Alli Lofquist stood at the end of the runway, pole in hand, staring down the opening bar set at 3.52 meters — a height she cleared countless times before during her five-year career at Boston University. But on her first attempt, she missed. Unbothered, Lofquist walked back to her coach, shoulders relaxed and smiling. A few vaults later, she cleared 3.82 meters, a new personal best. Then came 3.92.
