    More young people will soon benefit from free ferry travel, the Scottish Government has announced. From 23 June 2025, young people aged 19-21 who live on Scottish islands are eligible for concessionary ferry vouchers for travel between their home island and the Scottish mainland.

    The remaining trout farming assets of Scottish fish farming business Dawnfresh look set to become showcases for a revolutionary new farming system, being developed by the Gael Force Group, which was first established in Stornoway in the 1980s. The  Community Council held a Special Meeting on Thursday 10 April to decide on its formal response to the Application for Planning Permission by SSEN to build a HVDC Convertor Station near Arnish.

    Within hours of a crucial summit conference on the years-long ferry disruption affecting South Uist in particular, the Scottish Government is reported to have acted today (Monday April 14). SNP MSP for Na h-Eileanan an Iar, Alasdair Allan, said he welcomed this afternoon’s announcement that a resilience fund will be established to support island businesses. This support will assist island businesses with the impact of challenges such as travel disruption locally.
