Warm temperatures, scattered showers and the chance for strong to severe storms loom in the Chicago area forecast Monday, the NBC 5 Storm Team said. According to NBC 5 Meteorologist Alicia Roman, the storms aren't expected to look the same as what the Chicago area saw last week, when 11 tornadoes touched down in the state. Still, Roman said, some thunderstorms Monday could be powerful.

The Chicago area went from near-record warmth to damaging storms to winter cold in a matter of hours, so what can residents expect next? While Wednesday started off bitter cold, especially given temperatures were in the 70s for the start of the week, things are expected to improve in the days ahead. While Wednesday stays cold, reaching only into the 20s and 30s with winds gusting as high as 40 miles per hour, warmer temps are on the horizon.

And just like that, Chicago is back to winter. Following several days of temperatures in the 70s -- and severe weather bringing heavy lightning, golf-ball sized hail and reports of multiple tornadoes -- the weather conditions in the Chicago area will turn again, with cold wind chills and the chance for snow in some parts. According to the NBC 5 Storm Team the high temperature Wednesday of 49 degrees hit around midnight. From there, temperatures gradually started to tumble.

Tuesday will be tank-top weather as the Chicago area is expected to either tie or break the record for the warmest temperature ever recorded in the city for February -- or meteorological winter, for that matter. According to the NBC 5 Storm Team, Chicago's record-high temperature of 75 degrees for Feb. 27 was set in 1976. So far, that temperature is the warmest the city has hit in winter. Tuesday's forecast high, of 76 degrees, could break that.

From 70-degrees, to the potential for golf-ball sized hail and then snow: Wild weather is on the horizon for the Chicago area, beginning with high temperatures that could become the warmest ever recorded in Chicago during winter. "We are in for an absolutely wild meteorological ride, with summer (record warmth), spring (severe storms?), and winter (snow/cold) weather all crammed into the next 24 hours!" a tweet from the National Weather Service said.
