Six months after the U.S. Eventing Association announced that it would be recognizing the starter level for the 2024 show season, USEA, in conjunction with Equestrian Events Inc. and Mary Fike, announced Thursday that starter level will be included at this year’s USEA American Eventing Championships, to be held Aug. 27-Sept. 1 in Lexington, Kentucky. The championships will offer two starter divisions, open and junior.

While recovering from a broken scapula in 2017, upper-level eventer Robyn Fisher started browsing the internet and, as she tells it, somehow ended up with three horses out of Europe. After 17-year old Raina Swani laid down a solid trip in the junior hunter, 16-17, stake class at the 2023 National Horse Show (Kentucky) aboard Spoken, all that was left to do was watch and wait. She had gone second, with 13 more pairs still to compete after her. “I was praying to God that I didn’t get bumped down to third place,” she said. “On the first day [of the division], I won both classes and then placed third in the hack, so I knew I would be champion.

When 13-year-old Tessa Downey walked up in her paddock boots and garters to try towering 17.2-hand HH Moonshine almost five years ago, the gelding’s trainer was a tad skeptical. “I remember Val [Renihan] looked at my paddock boots and was like, ‘I’m not sure how this is going to go,’ ” Downey, Houston, Texas, recalled with a laugh.

Phillip Dutton, 60, has ridden in every Olympic Games since 1996 and has contested seven world championships. He won two Olympic team gold medals while riding for Australia and took individual bronze for the United States in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. He is one of the country’s most experienced five-star riders, earning multiple top-10 finishes at the Badminton CCI5*-L (England), Burghley CCI5*-L (England) and Kentucky CCI5*-L, and winning Rolex Kentucky in 2008 aboard Connaught.

Netflix and a weekend spent relaxing on the couch isn’t Dr. Kathleen Bertuna’s style. Between working as an obstetrician gynecologist, keeping up with her children’s sports schedules, and competing at the Fédération Equestre Internationale levels, there’s not much time left over to chill. “You’ve got to hold on to your goals and what you want to do, and just white-knuckle it and don’t let go,” said Bertuna, 45, Athens, Ohio.
