For decades, Victor Saunders worked to intervene and disrupt the city’s entrenched and seemingly insolvable problem of youth violence and gang involvement. Known to many as “Big Vic,” he was referred to as an uncle and father to the city. Saunders died Thursday. He was 59. “My heart is broken,” Mayor Malik Evans said in a statement, mourning the loss of “a good friend,” and one of his closest advisors. In his most recent post, Saunders led the city’s violence prevention efforts.

City officials are taking a closer look at the possible decommissioning of Highland Park Reservoir. And that is necessitating that they simultaneously look at changes to Cobbs Hill Reservoir, as well. “It might be a second reservoir. It might be somehow partitioning the existing reservoir,” said David Rowley, water production manager for the city.

A fake Rolex and other counterfeit high-end watches. Multiple imitation designer handbags, sunglasses and bathrobes. And some Nike “swoosh” heat transfer stickers. All were included in a shipment of bogus goods that U.S. Customs and Border Patrol intercepted at the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport. Officials made the announcement Monday. The airport doubles as a point of entry for foreign goods.

Rochester school board member James Patterson is considering an independent run for re-election after failing to get on the Democratic ballot line. And longtime board member Cynthia Elliott did not file petitions to seek re-election. That leaves four Democratic candidates in the running for three open seats, setting up a June primary with just one incumbent, board President Camille Simmons.

A judge on Friday tossed out Irondequoit town Supervisor Andraé Evans' latest bid to secure a Democratic ballot line for re-election. Evans went to court this week after the Board of Elections ruled he did not get the required number of voter signatures to get on the ballot. He sought to overturn that decision, and join a June primary against challenger and town board member John Perticone.
