Mesa has a $2.79-billion spending plan in place for the fiscal year beginning July 1 that includes a significant ongoing salary increase for public safety personnel and the use of reserve monies to close a deficit. Council last week voted 6-1 to approve the budget, which includes $741 million for capital projects. “The proposed budget that you’re going to vote on this evening will show a General Fund deficit of $18 million,” said resident Carey Davis at the June 2 meeting.

Soletrust could bring a hotel to the site of The Grid, an unfinished multi-use project sitting dormant on 3 acres of city-owned land at the southwest corner of Main Street and Pomeroy in downtown Mesa. City Council last week approved without comment a ground lease and other agreements, clearing the way for the developer to buy the building out of bankruptcy court. The developer also has negotiated settlement of all 32 claims against the bankruptcy estate, according to the city.

Chubby Skewers is bringing street food from the night markets in Northeast China to Mesa at Guadalupe and Dobson roads. The first Arizona location of a popular barbecue chain in China offers an array of skewered meats, seafood and vegetables for late-night diners and those looking to take their taste buds on a new experience. “All the skewers here are fresh that we put out the same day,” said restaurant owner Noel Cheng, who is partnering with the Chubby Group on the concept.
