A North Queensland grazier has been committed to stand trial for the alleged triple murder shooting of his neighbours and the attempted murder of another man. Darryl Valroy Young, 60, is charged with three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder at Bogie, west of Bowen, on August 4, 2022. He has not entered a plea. The grazier is accused of shooting dead his neighbours, husband and wife Mervyn and Maree Schwarz, along with Ms Schwarz's son Graham Tighe.

A fire burning at a Queensland coal mine has triggered fears of an explosion similar to one that occurred at the site in 2020. Five workers were injured in that incident and workers and residents are worried it could happen again. Miner Anglo American says efforts to seal the mine are underway and that an investigation will be conducted in due course. Authorities are racing to seal at least six shafts at the burning Grosvenor Coal Mine as the union warns of the the risk of another explosion.

An underground inferno is pumping out clouds of black smoke as Anglo American works to extinguish a fire at its Grosvenor Coal Mine in Central Queensland. Emergency services are closely monitoring the wind direction and have issued a warning to people to stay indoors and keep windows and doors closed. The mine is on the outskirts of the township of Moranbah, which has a population of about 9,500.

Accused killer Ryan Cole spent the months leading up to his birthday this week stripping and repainting an old fishing boat in the front yard of his north Queensland home. Nearby residents waved hello as they passed his Robb Place address in South Mackay, commenting on how well he was getting on with the restoration project. They had no inkling that on his 31st birthday Mr Cole would allegedly shoot dead a young woman as she sat in her car in the driveway of her home next door.

Anglo American will sell all of its Australian steelmaking coal mines, including five in Queensland, after rejecting a takeover bid from rival BHP. Anglo American chief executive Duncan Wanblad said the changes would come in "urgently" and the sale of its Australian assets would be used to "reset" the company's balance sheet. The company said the move would "create uncertainty for its workforce", however there had been "strong buyer interest" in the high quality assets.
