The legal process that could lead to freedom for Lyle and Erik Menendez was allowed to continue, against the wishes of Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman, by a judge’s April 11 ruling in Van Nuys Superior Court. The Menendez brothers, who were one-time residents of Calabasas, were convicted nearly three decades ago of murdering their parents with shotguns in 1989 at the family’s mansion home in Beverly Hills. They were sentenced to life in prison without parole.

As dump trucks continuously ferry debris from the Palisades fire burn zone to the Calabasas Landfill off of Lost Hills Road, frustrated residents and city officials are struggling to mitigate the impacts of the heavy-duty traffic. At its April 9 meeting the City Council voted unanimously to widen an ordinance regulating truck parking—which previously did not apply to the kind of haulers being used for fire debris—and stopping the dozens that use Agoura Road, particularly at night.

Ben Suber of Agoura Hills is active in his community in more ways than one, complementing a busy volunteer schedule with a running regimen that paid off winningly at this year’s Great Race of Agoura. Three was a magic number for Suber on April 5, when he competed for the third time in the Triple Stack Challenge—a combination of 10K, 5K and one-mile runs for a total of 10.3 miles—and finished first among 89 entrants with an overall time of 1 hour, 6 minutes and 26 seconds.

Westlake Village Mayor Kelly Honig has officially entered the race to succeed Jacqui Irwin (D-Thousand Oaks) as representative in Sacramento of California’s 42nd Assembly District. Honig, a moderate Democrat, made the announcement April 2, having earlier indicated her interest in running. She joins Agoura Hills City Councilmember Deborah Klein Lopez, also a Dem, and Newbury Park businessman Ted Nordblum, a Republican, in vying for the term-limited Irwin seat. The primary election is June 2026.

For the last seven or eight years, Cris Borgnine lived in fear of what might happen at the home of his next-door neighbor. “When they moved in here, I told the office manager that something’s not right,” Borgnine recalled, speaking in front of his house in Calabasas Village Mobile Estates off of Mulholland Highway. He had to lower the respirator mask he was wearing in order to talk. It was April 3, and Borgnine and his son Anthony, 19, were standing on their property amid an acrid smell.
