Israel’s military is advancing into southern Gaza in a push that ushers in a new phase of its war against Hamas — and an increasingly perilous situation for Palestinian civilians who have few safe places left to go. New satellite imagery Monday showed dozens of armored vehicles about 1½ miles north of Khan Younis, the largest city in the south. “For people ordered to evacuate, there is nowhere safe to go and very little to survive on,” U.N. Secretary General António Guterres said.

Israel is expanding its ground operations in the Gaza Strip after hours of intense airstrikes, Daniel Hagari, Israel Defense Forces spokesman, told reporters Friday. The United Nations has warned that Gaza’s 2 million residents face a humanitarian catastrophe. Israel’s announcement came amid a “total or near total” internet blackout, the largest single disruption since hostilities began Oct. 7, according to internet monitoring groups.

Hurricane Otis made landfall overnight near Acapulco, Mexico, as a Category 5 hurricane with 165 mph winds. The storm rapidly grew from a tropical storm in the morning to Category 5 by evening, the fastest strengthening on record in the northeast Pacific. Damaging winds were spreading along with heavy rainfall leading to flash flooding, the Hurricane Center wrote in an update. It warned of “extremely destructive winds near the core during the next few hours” and mudslides in higher terrain.
