Wildfire smoke from Canada has been blowing southward across the United States since last week. This has been the result of our upper level low nearby helping funnel a north-south flow to our west. While our weather through the weekend has been yucky, it’s actually helped spare our region much of that smoke. Until now. Have you noticed it? Wildfire smoke is on the move as upper steering winds start to shift. This will drive smoke eastward, adding an increasing haze to the sky over the next 24 hours.

As the flow turns more westerly, that plume of elevated smoke will start entering WNY over the next 24 hours. In fact, it’s happening right now.

The full “Pink” Moon of April will grace our skies Saturday night. This full Moon is a micromoon, set to be the smallest of 2025. Because the Moon’s orbit around Earth isn’t a perfect circle (it’s more like an oval), it is closer/farther from our planet at various points of the year. This weekend, it’s relatively far away. Like any object viewed from a distance, it will appear smaller & dimmer than a “normal” full Moon. Unfortunately, it won’t actually appear pink.

On the morning of Saturday, March 29, a partial solar eclipse will be visible across parts of the Great Lakes, New England & Canada. During a partial solar eclipse, there is no path of totality. There will be no dramatic shadow cast upon a narrow swatch of Earth, so no sudden darkening of the daytime sky. Instead, the Moon will carve out a chunk of the Sun (from our perspective), turning it into sort of a Pac-Man shape. The degree to which will occur will depend on exactly where you’re located.

Most sunsets are beautiful. This one was special. Captured this evening over Lake Ontario from Webster, New York. https://t.co/teDpvoXVoU
