LOS ANGELES - The mystery surrounding Los Angeles Dodgers rookie Roki Sasaki's gradual dip in fastball velocity deepened Tuesday afternoon as the Dodgers looked poised to place the 23-year-old Japanese right-hander on the injured list. Sasaki has been dealing with a right shoulder issue, a league source told The Athletic, and the injury has dropped Sasaki's former triple-digit radar gun readings into the mid-90s.

PHOENIX - His ankle is still not right. He does not run, he shuffles. Each of his frequent trips around the bases adds a tax to how long it'll be until Freddie Freeman's surgically-repaired right ankle feels like it should. Each day, the Los Angeles Dodgers' training staff starts with triage and looks to get Freeman's ankle back in the right place. "I'm not 100 percent," Freeman said, "but I feel good. I feel good enough."His swing has been more than good enough.

PHOENIX - Tony Gonsolin has learned he has something in reserve. The Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander's 84th and final pitch was the second-hardest one he would throw on Sunday, a 95.7 mph fastball. The only one faster (95.9) came an inning earlier in the fourth against the Arizona Diamondbacks, when he tried to blow strike three past outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. The velocity is back. Gonsolin has shown an ability post-surgery to keep something back for big spots.

PHOENIX - He raised both arms in triumph and looked to the sky as a ballpark watched in awe. It takes moments like these to stoke this fire out of Shohei Ohtani, to cause him to roar and flip his bat and find his emotional release. It is rare, even for a generational force such as Ohtani, to consistently do the unthinkable. To consistently find a way to make the game come to him. Baseball is built for moments of singular greatness in a team sport, but only when it is your turn to bat.

PHOENIX - Consider it a quirk of Major League Baseball's balanced schedule. The Los Angeles Dodgers had already completed their season series against the Chicago Cubs, Atlanta Braves and Miami Marlins before they had even played so much as a single game against their true division challengers in the Arizona Diamondbacks, San Diego Padres or San Francisco Giants. Until Thursday, the Diamondbacks had not faced a team within their division, period.

The Dodgers lost, 5-3. They are 25-13. The first matchup with a NL West competitor (sorry, Rockies) ends in a loss. Yoshinobu Yamamoto had his worst start of the year. Brandon Pfaadt gave up a lot of hard contact, but went 6.1 IP scoreless.

A leadoff walk, infield single and a hit by pitch loaded the bases against Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who hasn't had the sharpest command tonight. Then Gabriel Moreno hit a grand slam. 4-0 D-Backs.

Michael Conforto's hit the ball hard the last couple days. Hasn't been rewarded for it.
