WILLIAMSTOWN — There was a time in my youth when we didn’t have a family car. But I don’t think that is why I have owned two cars since 1995. A 1960s green Volkswagen Beetle driven by my aunt Shirley was the family car that was totaled in an accident during a snowstorm in the mid-1970s. I have a photo of me being held by my dad as he eased us into the car days after my birth.
