Just a few weeks into 2025, two significant efforts to stifle Russia’s energy revenues have already taken place. Both carry major energy security and geopolitical ramifications. On January 10, the US Treasury Department announced the most significant sanctions on Russian oil since 2014. And on January 1, over the objections of Moscow, a contract allowing for pipeline deliveries of Russian natural gas across Ukraine and into the European Union expired.

As the Mt. Bachelor lifts closed and the downhill skiers and snowboarders headed home late Saturday afternoon, snowshoers and cross country skiers were donning their layers, headlamps, and pairs of headphones for a different way to experience the snow trails. They took off from the Nordic Ski Center, following paths lined with tea lights, listening as Bend-based pianist and composer Paula Dreyer began her live set with Cloudchaser, an original song named after one of Mt. Bachelor’s ski lifts.
