BATAVIA – Neuqua Valley senior outside hitter Izzy Confessori was dealt a tough blow just prior to last season. Confessori was cut from the varsity roster due to high volumes of competitors in the program. Confessori admitted she initially was “done with volleyball overall” at the time. It didn’t stop her from taking in varsity matches as a spectator following her sophomore-level matches and supporting her friends that did make it to varsity.

Jack David won’t back down from whoever is in front of him on the line of scrimmage. It’s simply not in his competitive DNA. David, the 6-foot, 210-pound Batavia senior center, finds that internal drive to improve in the weight room every day. He spoke of it at West Aurora’s “Battle of the Big Butts” Linemen Challenge on July 13. “If I’m not squatting the most on the team, how am I supposed to move guys over 100 pounds more than me?” David said.

ST. CHARLES – Jake Zitella’s Major League Baseball career began with an unexpected phone call. And quite the fashion sense to boot. Zitella, the 2023 St. Charles East graduate, was drafted with the 486th overall pick by the New York Mets on Tuesday in the 16th round. “I was actually in the basement of my house just with my brother, Joey,” Zitella said Wednesday.

Led by 2023 Kane County Chronicle Girls Soccer Player of the Year Bella Najera of St. Charles North, here is the 2023 Kane County Chronicle Girls Soccer All-Area team:Macey DeMoss, Rosary, senior, forward: DeMoss had 18 goals and 20 assists this season. She finished with 90 career varsity goals. Brigid Gannon, Kaneland, senior, forward: Gannon had 30 goals and 11 assists and was an all-sectional honorable mention, Interstate Eight all-conference selection and conference co-MVP.

Alessio Milivojevic won’t have a difficult touchdown celebration to perfect in college. All the current St. Francis senior quarterback will have to do is bring his thumb and pointer finger together, while the remaining three fingers stand straight up – making the head of a Cardinal – and motion his arm up and down. The ‘chirps’ will soon follow. Milivojevic, the three-star recruit by 247 Sports and 28th overall 2024 prospect in Illinois, is Muncie, Indiana, bound.

BURLINGTON – On Burlington Central’s girls track Senior Night celebration, a teammate of Paige Greenhagel left a written message to Greenhagel she won’t soon forget. “I had one teammate that had written in one of her notes that she looked up to me and it made me feel really good that I can be a role model for some of those people,” Greenhagel said.
