A healthcare assistant working for the country’s biggest nursing home operator told an undercover reporter she ‘wouldn’t put my mother here, even if it’s my last breath’, according to a new RTÉ documentary. The staff member at a home owned by company Emeis, which runs 24 care homes here, was recorded by RTÉ Investigates saying she feels bad for the patients as ‘they don’t go out, all the activities are s***’.

Dublin City Council blamed ‘low usage’ as the reason for closing a €1.4million public toilet in the capital, but the council hasn’t recorded the number of people using the toilet in over a year-and-a-half. The announcement at the start of May that the only public toilets in the city centre would be closed was quickly reversed after backlash from city councillors and the public.

New Health Research Board figures reveal a record high of 13,295 people were treated for problem drug use in 2024, with cocaine accounting for almost half of cases. Since 2017, there has been a 250% increase in people receiving treatment for cocaine as their main problem drug, while the number of women seeking treatment for cocaine use has risen 426% to 1,494 cases last year.
