    The B.C. Highway Patrol is warning drivers about testing their vehicles’ capacity after a tune-up. One motorist who did just that ended up with a $483 fine for excessive speeding — he was going 218 kilometres an hour in a 90 km/h zone — along with a seven-day impound of his BMW and a jump in his insurance premiums. The 31-year-old Nanaimo man was pulled over about 5 p.m. on April 25 by officers checking speeds on the Trans-Canada Highway near Ladysmith.

    A man was taken safely into custody Sunday after having barricaded himself on a transit bus in an industrial area in Delta. According to the Delta Police Department (DPD), police were made aware of an incident on Annacis Island where a male with a knife had barricaded himself on the bus. Several passengers and the driver were evacuated, but one was injured. Lower Mainland District crises negotiators and the LMD Emergency Response Team were called to the scene.

    The second wildfire of the season is burning near Squamish. The fire, currently 0.5 hectares in size, is listed as out of control. It's located near the Skookum Creek Power Project, about 13 kilometres up the Mamquam Forest Service Road. The BC Wildfire Service said the fire is suspected to be human caused. Pique Newsmagazine reporter Liz McDonald was camping around 15.5 km up the road, with around 20 friends, when a passerby reported the wildfire to her group, shortly after 12 p.m. on May 4.
