Days after Anchorage School District principals notified 185 staff members that their positions will be cut next year absent a state funding boost, it’s become clear that many of those cuts could end or reduce more than half of the district’s high school choir programs. The district said it wasn’t yet able to provide the Daily News with a full list of affected positions, saying the decisions were left up to individual school principals.

Principals and supervisors throughout the Anchorage School District on Monday began notifying hundreds of educators that — barring additional funding from thestate — their position will be cut beginning next school year, according to the district. A school district official in a Friday email blamed the move on a $111 million deficit the district is facing, caused by nearly a decade of largely flat state formula funding, along with rising costs and inflation.
