    During a Friday hearing, the head of Alaska’s Department of Corrections acknowledged “bumps in the road” as an Anchorage facility recently accepted around 40 immigration detainees from outside the state under an agreement between the state and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The Anchorage Correctional Complex, where the men are currently being housed, has held federal detainees before in much smaller numbers, said DOC Commissioner Jen Winkelman.

    The Anchorage School Board held an emergency meeting on Thursday evening to address a $4.3 million budget deficit created by Gov. Mike Dunleavy’s veto of school funding in the upcoming school year’s budget. Board members agreed to institute a hiring freeze for the district, and also asked the district to compile a list of potential budget reductions.

    A bill that would rescind nearly all federal funding for public broadcasting in the United States passed the U.S. House on Thursday in a 214-212 vote. Alaska’s lone representative, Nick Begich, votedin favor of eliminating the funds that heavily subsidize the state’s 27 public radio stations and four public TV stations.
