The Phoenix Mercury are retiring their trusty SUV driven by franchise legends Diana Taurasi and Brittney Griner and are handing the keys to the 2025 model to a trio of high-powered leaders. The Mercury began the succession plan before last season. Instead of using the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft on a younger player, the Mercury used the pick to trade for Kahleah Copper from the Chicago Sky.

The WNBA season is one week away, and the Phoenix Mercury will need to make some tough decisions. Without Diana Taurasi or Brittney Griner, the Mercury don’t have the roster locked down like in past seasons. Competition has been stiff as the Mercury came into training camp carrying one of the league’s biggest rosters with 19 players. Phoenix needs to fill 12 roster spots before the May 15 deadline. As of Friday, May 9, there are 17 players on the roster.
