    Arizona public schools received $331 in federal money per student in the 2023 fiscal year, according to new census data. By the numbers: That puts Arizona 28th out of the 50 states and the District of Columbia, and below the national average of about $360. Alaska collected the most with $846 per person and Utah got the least at $220.

By the numbers: Arizona climbed to 30th place among the best states, up from 37th in the 2023 rankings and 39th in 2021. The rankings are based on 71 metrics in eight categories — crime and corrections, economy, education, fiscal stability, health care, infrastructure, natural environment and opportunity.
