The Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity has announced the 2024 Jury Presidents and has opened its portal for this year’s awards submissions. Among the global experts confirmed to lead the juries is Apple’s VP of Marketing and Communications, Tor Myhren, who will serve as the Film Lions Jury President — the first time Apple has been represented.

The Financial Times has released its new brand film, Without fear and without favour, part of its fearlessly pink campaign. On the eve of the UN’s International Day of Democracy, the FT launched the film by projecting it onto County Hall, across the Thames from Westminster.

I've always loved that quote. I love it even more now that I have discovered - in the process of writing these words - that it was Bill Bernbach who said it. An adman. The fact that a piece of wisdom such as this came from one of our own hits hard.
In an unprincipled business such as this, maybe we need to think about creating change from the inside.
Advertising is much maligned as an industry that lacks morals.

On paper there is a gulf a mile wide between truth and lies and in that space is a grey-coloured ocean of nuance and contextWhat do you think of my new haircut? Did you like my parents? Is Father Christmas real? And, closer to home, did my presentation lose us that pitch? Does the team like me? If we all walked around speaking our truth it would be chaos. We’d be a society of lonely, isolated and insecure people all painfully aware of what everyone else really thought of us.

Christopher Lasch’s The Culture of Narcissism describes how the individualization and emphasize on personal success on one hand, and the failing of structures linking individuals gave rise to narcissism. In a society divided by filter bubbles, echo chambers and self-indulgence on social media platforms — some salute his arguments for standing the test of time. In 2023, Lasch’s observation of an increasingly lost sense of reality (‘What even is real anymore, Chat GPT?’) rings almost prophetic.

What have hope and kindness got to do with advertising, we might ask. It’s a good question. These qualities seem to have deserted us in a long & frost-bitten winter of rolling crisis. Both inside our little world – and out in there in the real world. When everything is broken everywhere — all at once — it’s easy to feel defeat. What’s the point in hoping for better? The ones in power have zero interest in changing an unfair system. One that they created to keep the scales tipped in their own favour.
