Police investigating fatal shooting in south Phoenix

PHOENIX — One person is dead after a shooting reported Monday afternoon in south Phoenix. Phoenix police said officers were dispatched to the area of 24th Street and Baseline Road at about 1:30 p.m. for reports of a shooting and found a man suffering from a gunshot wound. The wounded man was transported to a hospital and died. Police said a man has been detained at the scene and homicide detectives will be taking over the investigation.

College officials said the fire was reported at the campus' student union building after smoke was detected in the area. The fire has interrupted propane service, leaving the campus' housing facilities without access to heating. Temporary heating solutions are being organized. All classes have been temporarily canceled and will be transitioned to an online format.
Hiker lost for 2 days rescued in southern Arizona

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, Ariz. — Border Patrol officials were dispatched Sunday to track down a lost hiker in southern Arizona. Agents responded to a call from the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office to help with rescuing an injured hiker on the Arizona Trail near Pauline Ridge. Agents on the ground managed to locate the hiker who had reportedly been lost for two days, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

PHOENIX — Phoenix-born rock star Stevie Nicks is returning to the Valley later this year for a concert at PHX Arena. Nicks, who is the first woman to be inducted twice into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, is making a stop in Phoenix on Oct. 7 as part of her 2025 tour. The Fleetwood Mac singer was born in Phoenix and had a property in Paradise Valley for many years. Nicks has regularly returned to the Grand Canyon State and performed at Chase Field with Billy Joel in late 2023.

MESA, Ariz. — Mesa Police Chief Kenneth Cost has announced his retirement from the agency after a 30-year career. Cost will be leaving June 30 after serving as police chief since 2019. “It has been the greatest honor of my professional life to serve as Mesa’s Police Chief and to work alongside the dedicated men and women of this department,” Cost said in a statement. A new police chief will be appointed by incoming City Manager Scott Butler later this summer.
Chandler bans camping in public places, storing items at bus stops

CHANDLER, Ariz. — The Chandler City Council voted Thursday to implement new policies that ban camping on public property or loitering around bus stops for more than an hour. Individuals who attempt to set up a tent or shelter on a public facility or within 500 feet of a school could be subject to a criminal citation for a Class 1 misdemeanor. Citations will occur only after if the individual has received a warning within the previous year.

Killer sentenced after dismembered remains of elderly man found in Phoenix home

PHOENIX — A man was recently sentenced to life in prison after Phoenix police discovered the dismembered remains of a 79-year-old hidden inside a Valley residence. Thomas Wallace was convicted of first-degree murder, trafficking stolen property and concealing body parts for a series of events that occurred in the fall of 2022. On Nov. 1, 2022, Phoenix police officers conducted a welfare check for Kenneth Peterson and made a gruesome discovery inside the home.
