Concern over rising insurance cost for thatched buildings

The owner of a thatched pub in Co Louth has said he cannot afford to pay his insurance premium, after receiving a quote of almost €20,000. Stuart Carolan, who co-owns The Morning Star pub in the village of Tullyallen with his father Pat, said removing the thatch is the "last thing we want to do", but he is considering the options for his business. He wants to highlight the challenges facing owners of thatched properties in Ireland.
IWA day centre services return in Cavan on phased basis

In person day-services at the Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA) in Co Cavan are resuming on a phased basis after closing their doors earlier this year. Services were reduced to an outreach-only model in April due to staff shortages. This meant that its 36 service users who would have attended the day centre in person switched to receiving home visits from staff instead. The outreach also included day-trips, zoom and phone calls.
Opponents to Louth greenway hand petition to councillors

A convoy of tractors and cars rolled into Dundalk from the Cooley Peninsula this morning in a show of opposition to a proposed greenway in the area. The proposed Dundalk Bay to Carlingford Greenway would connect with the existing Carlingford Lough Greenway, leading to a continuous cross-border greenway from Dundalk in Co Louth to Newry, Co Down. It is a Louth County Council project in conjunction with Transport Infrastructure Ireland.

A Dundalk restaurant visited by US President Joe Biden during his trip to Ireland last year has closed its doors. In a post on Facebook, McAteers The Food House said that it has ceased trading as of today. The business said that it was "impossible for us to continue trading", and that, after a difficult few years, it had become "harder by the day to keep the ship afloat". The restaurant cited numerous factors, including high costs, as being behind its decision.
Investigation after man's body discovered in Drogheda

Gardaí are investigating after a man's body was discovered in Drogheda, Co Louth. The body of the man aged in his 30s was found at a location in Greenhills. Gardaí were called to the scene at around 9pm last night. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The area has been sealed off pending an examination and both the State pathologist and the local coroner have been notified. Gardaí say that results of a post-mortem examination will determine the course of their investigation.
Saipan filming to begin in Belfast this week

Filming of Saipan, a movie based on the lead-up to Ireland's 2002 World Cup campaign, is due to get underway in Belfast later this week. The producer, Trevor Birney, confirmed to RTÉ that shooting will start on Thursday. The 5-week production will be filmed at locations around Ireland and Northern Ireland. Cork's Éanna Hardwicke is set to play Roy Keane, while Steve Coogan has been cast as Mick McCarthy. He said the script and the cast are "fantastic".

Once upon a time, around 100 years ago, Ireland had a more extensive rail network than it does today. Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan said that we had "the best rail service in the world back in 1920" - a network that we built ourselves. Then, it was more than 5,000km long. Today, it's around half that. But that could all change, if proposals to transform rail travel on the island of Ireland is implemented.
Plan to restore derelict heritage town centre buildings

Five publicly-owned derelict heritage buildings around the country are to be restored and revitalised under a €32 million funding scheme. The aim is to bring vacant heritage buildings back into public use to revitalise urban centres. The chosen projects in Navan, Gorey, Mallow, Waterford and Galway will be transformed into things like theatres, cultural and community hubs, arts centres and children's visitor attractions.
