The call was bad news. On the line was someone with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, gravely informing Molly that there was a warrant for her arrest. She had missed jury duty, she was told, and needed to pay restitution to avoid arrest. The cop recited her full name, current address, a citation number and talked about verifying her signature on a certified letter, which she would need to do at the sheriff’s office in downtown Phoenix.

After a relatively mild start, Phoenix’s summer is now in full swing. Temperatures sit comfortably above 100 degrees every day, and they might not come down for good until October. Arizonans know how to deal with this. We stay inside, crank up the air conditioning and make only brief appearances in the heat, either to walk the dog at dawn or dusk or make a quick dash to the car. But on Saturday, thousands of Arizonans braved the heat to attend anti-Trump “No Kings” protests across the Valley.

The county board of supervisors, which is dominated by officials in Heap’s party, has called out his shenanigans with increasingly pointed ridicule. All the while, both sides have yet to strike a deal on how to run elections in the county.

The biggest American measles outbreak in years has finally hit Arizona. On Monday, four cases of measles were confirmed in Navajo County. The cases are the first of the infectious disease that the state has seen so far this year, despite outbreaks in Texas and New Mexico. For many people in the public health community, this news was only a matter of time, as Arizona’s measles vaccination rate lags well behind the threshold needed for herd immunity.
