RESERVE A TABLEYes, bacon-wrapped dates are now as common at restaurants as being told to “order two to three small plates per person.” But Avec’s chorizo-stuffed dates were ahead of the trend 20 years ago, and remain a standout.

Birrieria Zaragoza reels you in right away with its carving station and the smell of pressed-to-order tortillas. This tiny taqueria has been specializing in Jalisco-style birria since 2007, and even though the menu is small, they set the standard for birria citywide. Their stewed goat basically melts on impact, and the meat's funk is nicely balanced out by smoky arbol consomé. Sun Wah is the Peking duck king of Chicago.

This Korean listening bar is what we call basement chic—it’s decorated with old radios and a whole lot of wood paneling, an aesthetic worthy of Midwestern Luxe magazine. Fun vinyl is always crackling through the speakers, and they have excellent snacks and drinks, like a bingsu cocktail that tastes like Fruity Pebbles. Just know that the rules of “the comfy couch” apply—Parachute HiFi is a first come, first serve spot. Arrive early in the night to grab a place to hang.
