The Diamondbacks’ Corbin Carroll slashed a liner past the first baseman and into the right-field corner, then raced around the bases for a triple on Sunday, April 6, in Washington. The ball left his bat at 115.8 mph. It was the hardest-hit ball of his career — the second time already this season Carroll had established a personal best. Exit velocity is just one marker, but it is one of many that stood out for Carroll in the opening weeks of the season.

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo was ejected from the game while making a pitching change in the top of the seventh inning, a move that came moments after a questionable call by first base umpire Laz Diaz on a check swing. Diaz ruled that the Orioles’ Tyler O’Neill checked his swing with two strikes on a pitch from Merrill Kelly. Replays appeared to show O’Neill went around. The Diamondbacks’ dugout immediately began chirping in Diaz’s direction.
