Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx leaves office at the end of the month, at which time she’ll be replaced by former Appellate Court Justice Eileen O’Neill Burke. Foxx was the first Black woman to serve as the county’s top prosecutor. During her eight years in office, she approved hundreds of exonerations, helped legalize marijuana and successfully pushed to abolish cash bail. Foxx also faced near-constant criticism for her so-called progressive approach.

When Cook County top prosecutor Kim Foxx leaves office December 1, the Chicago area will have just one state’s attorney from a national wave of progressive prosecutors. Of 102 state’s attorneys in Illinois, Foxx and Rinehart were the only ones who backed state legislation that eliminated cash bail last year. Rinehart this week defeated Republican Mary Cole, a Lake Bluff village trustee and former prosecutor who left his office in “disgust” with its “politicized management” and staff attrition.
