Phone scams on the rise in Worthington

WORTHINGTON — There have been a string of scam reports made in Worthington, with nearly 20 reports filed with the Worthington Police Department in just the last two months, according to Worthington Police Officer Chris Hillesheim. Some who have answered these calls have lost as much as $60,000. Hillesheim said many scammers have evolved their approach in recent years. “They're getting a little more sophisticated and they're pretty good at adapting,” Hillesheim said.
Worthington paramedic James Limmer dies in motorcycle crash

WORTHINGTON — Sanford Worthington’s ambulance crew has grown markedly quieter after the passing of paramedic James Limmer. Limmer, 28, was with his family in Appleton, Maine, on vacation when he died in a motorcycle crash on June 9. Limmer had been with Sanford Worthington for over eight years, joining right after he turned 18. Sanford Worthington Ambulance Manager Dave McNab said Limmer’s death is still on the minds of him and the rest of the ambulance crew.
Worthington Economic Development Authority approves sale of Sherwood Street property

WORTHINGTON — The Worthington Economic Development Authority (EDA) approved David Bosma’s proposal to purchase the lot at 1000 Sherwood Street and the submission of a conditional use permit for the property during its meeting Friday at Worthington City Hall. The site was formerly owned by Cemstone Concrete Materials, LLC., and the Worthington EDA acquired the property from Cemstone in a land swap deal.

WORTHINGTON — Rock and Nobles counties have a new Minnesota Department of Natural Resources officer. However, unlike most of her colleagues, she has four legs. Cora, a black lab, was partnered with Minnesota DNR Conservation Officer Dustin Roemeling, who serves the two counties, last December. She is trained to detect zebra mussels, game meat (namely venison and game birds), firearms, ammunition and missing people.

WORTHINGTON — First State Bank Southwest, along with Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines, donated $280,000 to seven nonprofits and schools in southwest Minnesota last week. First State Bank Southwest contributed $70,000, while FHLB Des Moines — who chose Minnesota as this year’s recipient of its Impact Fund — made a three-to-one match and donated $210,000. The entities to whom checks were awarded to include: Helping Hand Pregnancy Center, Worthington, $10,000. Love Inc., Worthington, $10,000.

SIBLEY, IOWA — Winds in excess of 70 mph Wednesday afternoon caused a path of destruction across portions of northwest Iowa, bringing down trees and grain bins, tipping semis on Iowa 60 and ripping roofs from buildings. While areas like Worthington recorded a maximum wind speed of 40 mph during the thunderstorm, Sibley, Iowa had wind speeds of 73 mph (with outliers reaching as high as 80 mph). Throughout the county, there's a lot of trees down and there's a lot of roof damage.

Ronald Lee Hallstrom, of Worthington, MN, passed away peacefully at the Sunset Hospice Cottage on May 11, 2025 at the age of 83 after a courageous battle with myeloma. Ron was born on the family farmstead south of Worthington on January 19, 1942, to Dorothy (Olson) and Melvin Hallstrom. Ron married his high school sweetheart Winora Kae Prins on June 9, 1961, and together they raised three boys: Scott, Todd, and Jeff.
