Initially established on May 30, 1868 by Union Army Major General John Logan, Memorial Day began as a day to commemorate those who had died fighting in the American Civil War.

SLAYTON — Murray County Central’s request to transition to a four-day school week was denied by the Minnesota Department of Education on April 25. The request was made to prevent budget cuts and save the district $300,000 annually. Since the denial, the school district has let five teachers go, made cuts to extracurricular programs and will see even more changes going forward next school year.

WORTHINGTON — The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources hosted a public comment session Thursday afternoon in Worthington about potential changes to hunting rules on the Lake Ocheda State Game Refuge. If approved, archery deer hunting would be allowed in the 1,951-acre refuge during fall waterfowl migration. In 2005, a rule change was made to allow public hunting during all seasons, except during the approximately 60-day waterfowl migration each fall.
