Bob Purcell steps down as Minnesota West men's athletic director

WORTHINGTON — When Bob Purcell transitioned into the full-time men’s athletic director role at Minnesota West Community & Technical College in 2017, it was a career-turning move. That year, he had just stepped down from a 20-year reign as the head wrestling coach, but the job he was moving into was far from unfamiliar. “The athletic director at the time had a stroke and I took it over for a year,” Purcell said.
WHS will send five athletes to state

ST. PETER — The Worthington Trojans qualified five athletes for state in this week’s Section 2AA Championships at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter. The section meet started Wednesday with prelims and concluded Friday with finals and WHS will send four boys and one girl to the upcoming Class AA meet. State meets across all classes will be June 10-12 at St. Michael-Albertville High School.
JCC clinches Section 3AA softball title

MARSHALL — Edgerton/Southwest Minnesota Christian’s softball team once-again found itself one round away from another state tournament berth, but ultimately came up short in a section runner-up finish. After a narrow 2-1 loss to Lac qui Parle Valley on May 24, the Dutchmen were on the brink of their season ending in the elimination bracket. They bounced back well with a 6-3 win over BOLD later that day.

MILROY — The Section 3A tournament continued Wednesday and Thursday for two area schools looking to bounce back from main bracket losses. Games were originally scheduled to continue on Tuesday, May 27, but were moved a day due to weather. One game from even had to be resumed because of the length of previous games. That was the case for the matchup between South Sub-Section No. 3 seed Russell-Tyler-Ruthton and No. 2 Edgerton/Southwest Minnesota Christian.
Area golfers compete in section meets

JORDAN – For the final time in the spring 2025 season, the Worthington Trojans took to the golf course in sections Tuesday and Wednesday at Ridges at Sand Creek. In the two-day tournament across two rounds, neither the WHS boys or girls teams had an athlete make it past Tuesday’s first round. The Trojan boys finished with a team score of 389 and the girls shot 411.
Six area farms reach Century status; two are now Sesquicentennial farms

REGIONAL — Two area farms are being honored this year as Sesquicentennial Farms, having been in family ownership for 150 years or more, while six area farms are being recognized as Century Farms, for 100 years of continuous family ownership. Qualifying Century and Sesquicentennial farms must be 50 acres or more and involved in agricultural production. All honorees receive a commemorative sign, as well as a certificate signed by Gov. Tim Walz.
Edgerton/SWC's Trevin Prins is this week's Peak Performer

EDGERTON — Southwest Minnesota Christian High School senior Trevin Prins is this week’s Peak Performer. Prins was a member of the SWC basketball team, earning all-area honors twice. He is also a standout baseball player for the Edgerton/SWC squad. A pitcher and infielder, Prins leads the Flying Dutchmen with a 0.375 batting average on 24 hits and 24 runs batted in at the plate. On the pitcher’s mound, he has a 5-1 record in seven starts with 53 strikeouts and a 1.254 earned run average.
Worthington draws Mankato East in Section 2AAA tournament

With the regular season now over for Worthington High School, the Trojans look ahead to the Section 2AAA tournament, which starts Wednesday. The Trojans ended the regular season with a 2-15 record and as a result are the No. 8 seed in the upcoming tourney. They are 0-7 against section opponents, twice each to St. Peter, New Ulm and Marshall and once to Jordan. They will open against top-seeded Mankato East.
Edgerton/SWC outlasts Adrian/Ellsworth in 17-inning marathon

EDGERTON — In one of the longest high school baseball games in Minnesota history, Edgerton/SWC finally got the best of area rival Adrian/Ellsworth 3-2 in a 17-inning Sub-Section 3A clash. It marked the third meeting between the two Red Rock Conference schools with plenty on the line. The winner would advance one step closer toward a potential march to state with the loser’s season coming to an end. But a win for the Flying Dutchmen seemed unlikely heading into the bottom of the 16th.
