A nearly $5 million improvement project at Phoenix's Piestewa Peak is stirring consternation among some local parks advocates who question the plan’s approval and why the public wasn’t notified. According to the city, the Ocotillo Ramada and trailhead along Piestewa Peak Drive will be closed until the fall as construction crews pave an entry roadway, add new parking and relocate an entry gate.

At the behest of a chorus of red-shirt-clad Phoenix residents calling for an end to the reverse lanes along 7th Street and 7th Avenue, city leaders unanimously supported a plan to study the roads around the heavily trafficked corridors colloquially referred to as “The Sevens.”The Phoenix City Council did not vote on May 21 to deny a citizen petition demanding the removal of the reverse lanes, or converted “suicide lanes,” that garnered 4,000 signatures.
