Shreveport City Council gets answers on failing water grade

SHREVEPORT, La. - It's been a few weeks since the water grades from the Louisiana Department of Health were released. The City of Shreveport received an F. Monday was the first City Council meeting since the grades were released. Council members wanted clear answers on the failing grade and what's being done to improve it. Brandon Sneed had been interim water director for less than a week when he was put in the hot seat to address the water grade.

SHREVEPORT, La. - Shreveport police do not suspect foul play but are investigating the discovery Friday morning of a woman's body submerged in water at The Oaks of Louisiana on Flournoy Lucas Road. Officers and Shreveport fire personnel responded and found the woman, identified as Katherine Green, 79, in a canal down the hill near where she lived. Multiple members of the Violent Crimes Unit responded as well to head up the investigation.

SHREVEPORT, La. - The KTBS Freedom Fest series has officially kicked off, and it all leads to the 4th of July Freedom Fest Finale. Saturday was the life jacket giveaway, where 450 life jackets were given away. Now that school is wrapping up and summer is starting, many people like to spend their time swimming or having fun on a boat at the lake. According to the World Health Organization, an average of 11 people die in the United States daily from drowning. Life jackets can be a lifesaver.

Haughton High School graduate releases song

SHREVEPORT, La. - It's graduation season in the ArkLaTex, and there are many talented seniors in the class of 2025. Kylie Small is among them. She's a senior at Haughton High School, and on Saturday she will walk across the stage as valedictorian of her class. But today, something else was on her mind. She released her first song called, "Them Boys."Small grew up singing in church and at school events. Then her mom encouraged her to post her singing videos on TikTok.
Caddo commissioner complains SPD still not enforcing squatter problem; mayor disagrees

SHREVEPORT, La. - Caddo Parish Commissioner John-Paul Young has turned to social media once again to voice his concerns over the squatters in the Highland neighborhood. The Highland neighborhood has dealt with squatters for a while now. The Shreveport City Council last month put a new law in place to help combat the issue, but residents like Young and his neighbors believe there's still not enough being done. Young took to Facebook Tuesday morning after an issue with squatters on his street again.

SHREVEPORT, La. - The percentage of ALICE households in Shreveport is more than the overall state percentage. On Monday, United Way presented the statistics to the Shreveport City Council. ALICE stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. Someone living paycheck to paycheck or tight on finances would be considered ALICE. ALICE affects many of the people we encounter in our day-to-day lives, like retail workers, waiters, and childcare workers.
Shreveport native gets school in Ghana named in her honor

SHREVEPORT, La. - It's 6,078 miles from Shreveport to Ghana, West Africa, but a longtime Shreveport resident has bridged the gap between the two very different places. Mae Harley is a member of New Covenant Church of God in Shreveport, and now the children in a small village in Ghana will soon be going to a vocational school established in her honor. Harley has been a benefactor in supporting not only the community in Ghana but especially education for the youth there.
U.S. Highway 80 commute to be bumpy during construction

HAUGHTON, La. - If you travel along U.S. Highway 80 near Louisiana Downs, you may have noticed a few bumps in the road during your commute. The heavily traveled highway is currently under construction. The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development is in charge of the project. It's similar to what was done recently to Youree Drive. DOTD spokeswoman Erin Buchanan said the plan is to patch, mill, and overlay the highway.
SPD places officer on leave after social media posts

SHREVEPORT, La. - The Shreveport Police Department is taking action after it became aware of a video showing one of its officers fighting, as well as this same officer posting several TikToks in uniform with vulgar language. SPD Chief Wayne Smith has placed the officer on leave and an investigation will take place. "We really want our community to know that the police department does not want these types of images to represent what we are about," said SPD PIO Cpl. Chris Bordelon.
