Scottsdale is preparing to challenge a law by Gov. Katie Hobbs that paves the way for Axon, the Taser manufacturer, to build nearly 2,000 apartments and condos at its Scottsdale headquarters over the wishes of thousands of the city's voters. The City Council voted May 6 to pay $100,000 to hire attorney Dominic Draye from the firm Greenberg Traurig and potentially file legal action. The vote was 5-2, with Councilmembers Solange Whitehead and Maryann McAllen opposed.

Phoenix's new around-the-clock heat relief facility on the southern edge of downtown opened its doors May 1, 2025, and will serve the community through the scorching summer until the end of September. The facility on Jackson Street just west of Central Avenue offers respite to anyone in the public, including unhoused individuals and families whose a/c units go out.

Oak St.) in ScottsdaleDescription: The former Tonalea Elementary School is being transformed into "a multi-purpose recreational, athletic and community project," according to Scottsdale Unified School District. The site proposal shows eight sand volleyball courts will be built, plus a basketball court and soccer field. The parking lot along Oak Street will be re-surfaced and re-striped.

An officer at Yavapai County Sheriff's Office Animal Control saved a scruffy poodle from barbed wire. The officer responded to a report of a poodle stuck in barbed wire in Black Canyon City. A video posted by the Sheriff's Office on Facebook shows wire entangled in the dog's matted hair. Over the course of five minutes, the officer methodically separated and cut the wire from the dog's curls.
