Four Baton Rouge area teams are part of the latest baseball transition. The format is correctly lauded as the best way to determine the top teams in the top three select/nonselect divisions. It will be interesting to see what this format looks like in real time.

Cornerstone Chemical Company said it is shutting down one of the units at its Waggaman manufacturing facility, a move that will put 116 employees out of work. In a letter it sent to the Louisiana Workforce Commission on May 5, the company said it will mothball the acrylonitrile unit on July 31, and that 71 hourly plant workers will be laid off by Dec. 31. The layoffs will occur in three batches between July 31 and the end of the year.

A pre-K student spent several hours Monday trapped on a Baton Rouge school bus, long after he was supposed to be in school, leading to the dismissal of the driver. In a statement, Terry Robinson, a spokesman for the East Baton Rouge Parish school system, said the child was found safe and returned to his family, but the driver “is no longer employed by the school system." The student attends Delmont Pre-K Center at 5300 Douglas Ave., home to about 130 pre-K students.

The parade in Foster's honor is slated to start at 5 p.m. Wednesday, along First Street in Addis and end with a concert on the waterfront in Plaquemine at 7:30 p.m. Organizers are encouraging residents to arrive early for both the parade and concert.
