Eater Detroit
Eater is a network dedicated to food and dining, owned by Vox Media. It was established in 2005 by Lockhart Steele and Ben Leventhal, initially concentrating on nightlife and dining experiences in New York City. In 2009, Eater expanded to create a national platform and by 2012, it was covering nearly 20 cities. In late 2013, Vox Media acquired Eater along with two other brands from the Curbed Network. By 2017, Eater operated around 25 local sites across the United States, Canada, and England. The platform has received recognition from the James Beard Foundation Awards on four occasions.

GB in Detroit One of metro Detroit’s few cafes dedicated primarily to tea has closed its doors permanently after the landowner sold the property. Eli Tea, owned by Eli Majid, remained a stalwart for 10 years for offering more than 100 varieties of loose-leaf tea from its shop in Birmingham, supplying local coffee shops with their tea needs, and later launching a queer-friendly sober space in Chicago.

Taylor Higgins Chef Sarah Welch is leaving Eater Award-winning Marrow restaurant and butcher shop to move to Northern Michigan. Welch, who in 2018 helped launch Marrow, is opening a restaurant in Traverse City with her husband and business partner Cameron Rolka. Welch’s last day at Marrow will be on Wednesday, April 30. Even after her departure, she’ll retain a small ownership share.
