We drew from Bacchi’s “What’s the problem represented to be?” or WPR framework to inform the data collection and analysis approach used in the study. Additionally, we drew from the qualitative descriptive (QD) methodology for its flexibility in adapting a conceptual framework, which ‘allows researchers to place their study findings within a larger context’ to develop knowledge on the topic [16].

The World Health Organization (WHO) commissioned M&C Saatchi World Services, a specialist communication and research unit within M&C Saatchi, to design and implement a multi-country cross-sectional study. Local academic partners were identified in each participating country to provide expert guidance and oversight during implementation of the study, including study design, ethics approval, piloting, adaptation of tools and data collection.

Jiangsu Province is in southeastern China and has an area of 102.6 thousand square kilometres (Fig. 1A) [35]. In Jiangsu Province, there are 13 prefecture-level cities, and the permanent population reached 85.15 million by the end of 2022 (Fig. 1B) [36]. Regarding the number of imported malaria cases, Jiangsu Province has consistently ranked among the highest in China, with an annual number ranging from 90 to 405 between 2013 and 2020 [37].

We identified that beverage agreements are universal across retailers regardless of their market size. These agreements existed for every retailer in our sample that received direct-store delivery and servicing (DSD) by beverage companies, which included product delivery, stocking, ordering, and merchandizing in exchange for retailers providing a pre-specified space for beverage company products at a pre-specified retailer price.
