Port Arthur News
The News was established on March 18, 1897, when the Stump family, while traveling from Missouri, published its first weekly edition in a train's baggage car en route to their new destination. It transitioned to a daily publication (excluding Sundays) in 1901, and a Sunday edition was introduced in 1916, though it faced cancellations and later was brought back. By 1920, The News had absorbed all other local newspapers in Port Arthur, either through closure or acquisition. In 1921, a Texas newspaper group led by E.S. Fentress and Charles Marsh acquired The News and made enhancements to its headquarters and printing facilities until it was purchased by Cox Enterprises in 1976. Cox changed The News from an afternoon paper to a morning one in 1986. In 1991, Cox sold The News along with its companion publication, The Orange Leader, to American Publishing Company, which later sold them to CNHI in 1999. In 2014, Carpenter Newsmedia took ownership of The News.
