Chipmaker Intel said it is taking actions to streamline the organisation and eliminate management layers to enable faster decision-making. Yesterday, Bloomberg reported that the company was planning to cut 20% of its global workforce. It is not known what impact any job cuts would have on Intel's Irish operation, which employs 4,900 people. In its latest set of financial results, Intel gave a weak forecast for the current period.

The Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) carried out 5,156 inspections in 2024 with €2.15m recovered in unpaid wages. The WRC's annual report for last year shows that successful prosecutions were up 27% on 2023. There was a decrease of 4% in the volume of telephone calls dealt with, while website pageviews also decreased by over 7%. The WRC saw an increase of 6% in adjudication hearings offered in 2024 compared to 2023.

An Bord Pleanála has granted planning approval to Gyproc, Ireland's only domestic manufacturer of plaster and plasterboard products, for a quarry in Co Monaghan. The company has welcomed the decision to grant permission in respect of its plans for a new open-cast gypsum quarry at Magheracloone near the county border with Cavan.

Protecting children online and tackling disinformation are among the priorities outlined in new plans published by Coimisiún na Meán. In its programme of work for 2025, the media regulator said it will pilot a programme to provide support for children at imminent risk of harm from online content, as a precursor to consideration of a wider individual complaints mechanism. The commission has also published a three-year strategy statement.
