Phoenix — The Arizona Diamondbacks are not yet playing their best baseball, but they are getting closer. That was the sentiment from manager Torey Lovullo after a 5-2 victory over the Brewers on Sunday, capping a 4-2 homestand with series wins over Milwaukee and Baltimore. The D-backs lost both series openers against 2024 playoff teams. They faced a daunting 4-0 deficit on Saturday night before storming back to stun Milwaukee on a walk-off Lourdes Gurriel Jr. sacrifice fly.

With ample opportunities, the Diamondbacks’ offense broke through after a slow start, tying the game on a Tim Tawa sacrifice fly in the sixth inning. Josh Naylor provided the lead with an RBI single in the seventh, and Alek Thomas broke the game open with a two-run single in the eighth.

PHOENIX — What became a subplot given the excitement of the Arizona Diamondbacks’ walk-off win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday was one of the club’s highest-profile home debuts. Diamondbacks fans had the chance to watch four-time All-Star pitcher Corbin Burnes make his long(er-than-expected)-awaited first home start at Chase Field after signing a team-record $210 million contract this past offseason. The applause during pregame introductions was notable.

The D-backs were at risk of being shut out for a second straight game with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning and a 4-0 deficit. The bottom third of the order was up.
