Mendota residents will get to see what fellow residents would like to see in the city and provide input themselves in a pair of community summits hosted by Reimagine Mendota. Volunteers have spent most of the summer gathering data, asking about 25% of the population in the city what they love about Mendota and what they would like to see in the future. The Focus on Mendota Summit will be 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Nov.

Mendota is reminding all residents that leaf pickup will continue, but leaves should be raked to the edge of the curb, not out into the roadway. Crews will be picking up leaves for the next few weeks, as long as the weather allows. Officials also reminded residents to check any outdoor hoses or spigots on houses, as with the temperatures starting to drop, that could lead to ruptured water lines. The city burn pit is scheduled to close on Dec. 1.

Mendota will be seeking bids for new bathrooms at Blackstone Park and Lake Mendota. Earlier this year the city was awarded grants from the American Rescue Plan Act to improve and build new facilities. A total of $350,000 in funding was available for the construction of a new building at the lake, and improving the existing facilities at Blackstone Park. A portion of the grant also was available for new recreation equipment. Bids will be due Dec. 4.

The La Salle County Veterans Assistance Commission will be offering a wish tree to get Christmas presents for those residents in the Illinois Veterans Home in La Salle. A tree will be set up with tags describing each resident and their needs for the public to use as guidance to purchase a new, unwrapped item as a gift. All presents will be due Dec. 1. The VAC is located at 4231 Progress Blvd, Unit 4, Peru.

The American Red Cross is calling on the community to rally around a cause that truly matters: Giving blood. The regular blood drives at the Mendota Moose Family Center are an indispensable lifeline, helping countless individuals facing medical emergencies and chronic conditions. With a series of blood drives scheduled for next year, residents have several opportunities to contribute to this life-saving cause. The drives will be from 10:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 211 E. 12th St., Mendota.
