For the 2025 summer, the City of Phoenix is expanding its trail closures on days where there is an excessive heat warning. Since 2021, trails at Camelback Mountain and Piestewa Peak have had parking lot gates closed from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on excessive heat warning days.

PHOENIX — Heat-related deaths dropped in Maricopa County in 2024 compared to 2023 as cities across the county work to increase heat relief efforts. A report released Monday shows Maricopa County had 602 heat-related deaths in 2024, compared to 645 in 2023. Eight additional deaths from 2024 are still under investigation.

ELOY, AZ — A 47-year-old man died while skydiving in Eloy on Feb. 16, 2025, according to the Pinal County Sheriff's Office. According to PCSO, deputies were called to the Skydive Arizona facility in Eloy for reports of an injured skydiver around 2 p.m.Once on scene, the man was located by deputies near the facility and was pronounced dead. According to witnesses on the scene, the man was known to be a "very experienced skydiver." The man's identity hasn't been released.

PHOENIX — The FAA is investigating after two planes flew too close together while approaching Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport over the weekend. It happened when the Delta Airlines and United Airlines flights were approaching the airport to land on Saturday around 11 a.m. An air traffic controller could be heard redirecting the planes because both were attempting to land on "runway 8" at almost the same time.
