    Beginning Tuesday, contractor crews and the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) will start work on a resurfacing project on Missouri Route 129 in Macon County from U.S. Route 36, near New Cambria, to the Chariton County line. One lane will remain open during resurfacing, according to MoDOT, with a 10-foot width restriction in place where crews are actively working. Flaggers and a pilot car will also be used to direct traffic through the work zone.

    Columbia Public Works will hold an informal open house meeting Monday concerning traffic calming on East Walnut Street east of Old Highway 63. Traffic in the area has been identified as operating at speeds higher than desirable, according to a news release from Public Works. The meeting, which will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. in Conference Room 1A of city hall, 701 E. Broadway, will allow residents to review design proposals, speak with staff and fill out a public comment card.

    An Eldon man was killed early Tuesday morning after he was struck by a truck in Miller County. Tyler Tompkins, 37, was hit by a Chevrolet Silverado 1500 pickup truck on Highway 52 near South Pine Street in Eldon, according to a Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report. The report did not say why Tompkins was in the road.

    Gov. Mike Parson on Tuesday ordered U.S. and Missouri flags to be flown at half-staff at government buildings in Lafayette County and all police stations Wednesday in honor of Lake Lafayette Police Department Chief Steven Singer. Singer, 48, was a 20-year law enforcement veteran who had served as a deputy, chief and deputy sheriff with the Lake Lafayette Police Department as chief, according to a news release.

    The Missouri Department of Conservation announced Monday that it is considering adding a limited antlerless-elk hunting season as early as 2025 and is seeking feedback on the matter. It comes after several years of successful antlered-elk hunting seasons, which was first reintroduced in the Missouri Ozarks about a decade ago, according to a news release. “Since the elk reintroduction was completed, we’ve watched elk numbers steadily increase,” MDC biologist Aaron Hildreth said.
